“The Emergency Department at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego is our ‘front door’ in providing clinical expertise with compassion and rapid response to assure optimum outcomes for our pediatric patients. Our nursing, physician, and ancillary staff treat over 70,000 patients a year and are ready to provide comprehensive care for everything from broken bones, respiratory ailments, flu symptoms and unusual rashes to traumatic injuries from falls, motor vehicle accidents, or bike collisions.” – LesleyAnn Carlson, Director, Emergency Care Center

The Sam S. and Rose Stein Emergency Care Center, which opened in July of 1993, is the only emergency department in the region designed exclusively to serve children. In fiscal year 2012, there were 68,105 emergency care visits; however, the ED was only built to support 25,000 visits a year.

In fiscal year 2012, Rady Children’s had 1,095 trauma cases. The greatest percentage of injuries was from falls, followed by motor vehicle accidents, and injuries from motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles.
